Once a person accepts that Imam Mahdi (as) was born on 15 Shabaan 255 AH, his mind starts doing mental calculations to determine his age. And that is when the questions start to crop up in one’s mind – How can Imam Mahdi (as) live for so long? Is is humanly possible for a person to have such a long life? Are there any examples in history?
These questions are valid and the answers to each of these questions and more are available through the Quran, traditions of Ahle Bayt (as), through history and even through science. The concept of Ghaybat has been discussed extensively in traditions. Right from its concept to preparation and duties of Shiahs in this period. Readers will also note that the beauty of these narrations lies in the uniformity of thought and words of the Ahle Bayt (as). These traditions are reported right from Holy Prophet (sawa) which is from about 1 AH to Imam Hasan Askari (as) which is up to 260 AH. A Short Biography of Imam Mahdi (as)
Hazrat Imam Mahdi (as) is the twelfth and last of the chain of the Purified Imams (as) and the divine successors. He was born at the time of dawn, on Friday the 15th of Shabaan 255 AH in the city of Samarrah. (Kamaluddin volume 2, pages 424, 428, 433)
His respected father is Imam Hasan al-Askari (as). His beloved mother is Janab al-Narjis Khatoon (sa). She was the descendant of the Caesar of Rome from her father’s side and from her mother’s side, she had descended from Hazrat Shamoon, the vicegerent of Hazrat Isa (as). Imam Mahdi (as) is the Twelfth Imam as per the belief of the Shiah Ithna Ashari (this is the sects of Islam that believes in the mastership of twelve Imams after the Holy Prophet of Islam (sawa)). He was born on 15th Shabaan 255 AH in Samarrah, Iraq to Imam Hasan Askari (as), the 11th Shiite Imam and Hazrat Narjis Khatoon (as). He is alive till today and in a state of occultation. Allah will cause him to re-appear whenever Allah wishes. After his re-appearance, he will fill the earth with justice and equality. Universal peace will prevail and the word of Allah will be completed.
